Glaze Test Forest

1/16/12

Ceramic Test Tiles - still greenware

Now that I am firing my own ceramics, I now have 18 new glazes that I need to test. I needed a shape. Something reasonably fast to make that stands upright. I wanted something beautiful. I decided on my favorite cookie cutter. I am very excited to have created the beginnings of a glaze test forest. In this photo, the clay is still drying. Once the trees are dry, I will bisque fire then glaze each tree with one new color.

What good is art?

1/2/12

Eartha

I am looking to probe into questions that will deepen the artistic experience. Why do you make art? What compels you to own a piece of art? How does art make you feel? What does art do for you?

I am interested in stimulating some dialogue on this subject to see where it goes.

Between Two Websites

12/15/11

  Sharing Earth

Susan has two websites. She has just updated her main website and now sells some of her most popular archival prints on the new site. We will be offering more images soon. Having art you love in your home is an enriching experience. Today's print technology makes it possible to surround yourself with high quality vivid reproductions of your favorite art even within a limited budget.

Inspired by Dirt

7/22/10

I saw the video - Dirt, The Movie. It broadened my understanding of the earth.  I have a clearer vision of what healthy soil looks like and it is beginning to inform my art. The new paintings are not ready to photograph or even know where they are leading, but they are coming along.

Connecting with inner harmony

6/3/10

I am so glad to live in a beautiful area of the Northwest.  As I embark on my next creative project, I am considering what is the most compelling thing I would like to do.  My feeling is that I will continue to concentrate on connecting with the calming energy of the trees and forest.  There is too much stress in the world.  We need calming to keep us sane.  The cedar trees in particular, have very calming energy.

In the glow of the open studio.

5/20/10

Just getting my studio back in order to work now that the big Open Studio exhibition is a memory.  We had over 600 visitors during the five day event. Many of our visitors went home with a piece of my art.  What a honor it is to have my work in so many homes across Washington.  Thank you to all!

Preparing for Open Studio

5/2/10

One of the great things about having an open studio happens during the preparing.  It creates an opportunity to organize the art I have been working on over the past year, giving me a significant overview of my own work.  This is a wonderful personal by product of exhibiting.  Camano Island Open Studios opens May 7th.

To paint or to blog, that is the question.

2/17/10

I am always so serious!  Every painting and every word must have purpose and meaning. I was reading ODE magazine yesterday - "Ode to Laughter" edition - and I am struck that being serious is a cultural attitude. I have long been thinking that if one has but a moment to communicate, it should be filled with importance.

no doubt, art is a serious matter, and pure decorative pieces must be sold through the furniture stores. it's when artist starts taking himself/herself too seriously, then it becomes tragic, borderline pathetic.
